I'm using Diskeeper V.8, it defrags my drives every time the screensaver kicks in.
I love diskeeper.

see, i would defrag, but it keeps getting hung up. Says the info changed and has to restart. Is there an easier way to go about defragging?

thats not free is it?No it is not, BUT! they do have a version that is called DKLite that is free.
I think the only difference is that you have to start it manually.
It is still a lot better than what Microsoft gives you.

defragmenter that is built into Windows XP is actually Diskeeper Lite, a freeware version of Diskeeper that comes with some motherboards and such. Its really Diskeeper without the "Set it and forget it" feature. If you are on Windows 98, then this beats the built in defragmenter by far and works much better. I can't comment on NT or 2000 but im assuming it will work slightly better than the built in defragmenter.

I found this when I did a google search on DKlite. I wanted to know if it would work on XP or not, because the download site said it was for windows 98.

Make sure you turn off your antivirus auto-protect when defragging.

I have experienced the problem with not being able to defrag because of something running. What will work is to control+alt+del, and stop some of the processes that do not need to be running. Defrag will then run much more efficiently! Good Luck

I just did it for the first time since I installed Windows.

It didn't take too long though. Good old SCSI.
