"They will love the new 90nm chips because they can buy a 3000+ running at 1.8GHz for less than $200 and still have a good chance of reaching 2.6GHz with very little effort with the same chip. 2.6GHz is faster than any current Athlon 64, and it is, in fact, the speed that we expect from the upcoming FX55 - the new Athlon 64 top-of-the-line. It's been a while since we've seen this kind of headroom on an AMD chip, and those who were waiting for 90nm to get a magic overclocker will get in line to buy the new 90nm 3000+."

btw, these are 939 pin, not the lesser 754 pin parts. One of these is going to be my next cpu....

Those were interesting benchmarks...I wondered if the 512k L2 cache would limit it more, but it seems to have fared quite well. I'd pretty much resigned myself to getting a 754 because of the cost, but this is indeed good news. I wonder how long before they're on the street or at builders?

NM, I see they can be had at at least one place:

they are already available on the street. as far as overclocking goes, don't expect it to overclock as someone said in this thread. that is not true. also the multipliers are locked so to get that high of a score could not be done. there is no core tweaks to this chip other than die shrink. soon there will be newer 939 boards from via and nvidia and also a new chipset from ati. theses new boards will have pci express and other goodies. rumor has it nvidia is bringing back sound storm audio to the nforce family. no info on the ati chipset as of yet. as far as socket 754, it will be a budget system and actualy is now. there is an athlon64 chip called a sempron that will be the main chip used for this board. the sempron is in the same class as a celeron but much better. consider it amd's celeron chip. the difference between the sempron and athlon 64 is smaller l2 cache, no 64 bit support. the semprons are pretty cheap but so is a socket 754 3000 or 3200 when you compare the differences.

i will be waiting for nvidia's sli package in the nforce 4 which will hold 2 full pci express cards and run them together as 1 video card. i saw a seminar on this and it's definetly something i am getting when available.

Yo DD. Thats funny, I just bought that case off new egg for my friends computer, and i must say it pissed me off. I got it with the powersupply busted through one of the screw wholes in the case, and the front panel broken. Little big, but light as hell. How do you like it?

Also we got the same MB :D you can see my specs in my sig below. Somewhat of close stuff, but your power supply and video card blow mine out of the water.
Party on bro! :)

I dont get this whole "headroom" thing with overclocking. What is stopping us from overclocking any other CPU but not this one. I've heard you gotta manually connect some pins under the cpu, but what exactly makes it so easy with this new 90nm or whatever it is?

Yeah, there was actually a caveat about that PS with earlier Asus boards, that's why I included this

Thermaltake Silent PurePower 560W Power Supply for AMD and Intel ATX 12V, Model "W0023" -RETAIL

I love Antecs, and could have had the 550, but this had more connectors and sheathed cables, and seems to do a right nice job of it, pushing six fans. I got UV cables and three UV fans to pretty it up.
How much do you get for the FX chips, btw?

Hey, Z! I like the case a lot, but that PS, oddly, blocks the tophole fan partially, and isn't the best. My Mom laid a bunch of money on me for the rig, so I went with a beefier PS, and I wouldn't have splurged so on the video card, but she wanted me to be happy...and that card is so far making me happy! The case was remarkably light, pretty, has the HD cage turned out for easy access. The sound stuff from the top connection is a bit much, don't you think? Lotta little 1 pin things. With the UV fans in it, it's nice looking, cool, and reasonably quiet.
I'm not really looking to OC, but some chips are more able to it than others. The celeron 300s with L2 cache some people were pushing to 450, but of course your power, RAM, and board all have to be able to take the stress, and I'm still pretty impressed with the speed of it all, though I was kinda wanting to get your 3500+ instead! Hopefully, this board will support me with a 4800 or the like in a couple of years.
