Port forwarding or Port opening...

I was just wondering whats the diffence between those two?

port forwarding is done from the router to send requests to a specific computer,
port opening has to be done on the computer to receive requests on the port

lets just say im using bittorrent, does this mean i should open the ports needed to get better speeds? or do i forward a port?

on the router specify 6881-6889 to forward to your computers ip address.
on the computer specify that bt can open those ports

the same thing you do when you host a server. if you are not running a firewall then you don't need to do anything, otherwise there may be advanced settings somewhere that specify what ports to open.

yeah, what are you using? some of the clients suck, but azureus does a good job with the bandwidth. opening the ports I found i went from an average of 12k to about 40k, and on well seeded torrents the numbers can climb....

Azureus is good. You should not use the standard ports cos they are blocked by some trackers ... use like port 45000 or so.

well thats not 100 % right. Depends on what you got. If you have a firewall in your router then you have to open the ports in the router interface. You can also just enable UPnP on your router and all ports will be mapped automatically ... you wont have to forward then :)

To Twin Dragon: oh i already had that enabled... so that means i dont have to manually forward a port?

I think the software has to support it too. So i dont know if shareaza does but it sure works just fine with azureus. You really should use this client :)

i just started downloading with azureus but i can only connect to 19 peers out of 20000 =/


EDIT: NVM it started connecting to a lot more peers :)

BT is set up to have hunt groups, probably batches of 100 or so that act as a group. there is crosspollination, but if you were to connect to too many peers, it would choke your connection. overall the guy who made this is very damn smart.

i just realized that azureus uses Java (yuck) so i switched to bitcomet and its just as good without all the cpu hogging :D
