:hmmm: Thanks for the post man. Might have to rethink my next purchase.
Well, that's depressing. But then ATI has had 6 months to work on thier post-release drivers, and I assume the FX drivers are still in beta. I dunno. :WTF:

I get the feeling with the FX card that, with the new technology they are using, as oposed to the GF2, 3, 4 continuation of older tech, that this is a Rev. 1 card - and the Rev 2 with be the MFin' shiznit. Hopefully, they will have no memory inferiority on FX 2, or even the second wave of FX 1. And, as they said, the RV350 is comin' 'round the corner, too, so if you've a wad o' dough you're looking to plunk down on a new video card, wait until the RV350 hits, so you can make a more informed purchase. And, Behind You, and the other Radeon 9700 owners, your purchase is holding up and looking great!
I'm not totally disheartened with the FX, I know it will indeed be a bad-boy in it's own right.

Well, it looks like I won't jump on that bandwagon like I thought I would. Better sit back and wait for the dust to settle.

When I read stuff like,
Lets review what we have here: It's half a year late, it takes up a PCI slot, sucks an enormous amount of power, runs extremely hot, and at last report, sounds like a Dustbuster, performs competitively with ATI's six-month-old Radeon 9700 Pro, and is expected to retail for $499 in the US or approximately 650 Euros in the EU. This isn't exactly a winning combination.
It makes me glad I'm poor! :hmmm:

Not really. I've done some driver updates, rollbacks, upgrade again. I had a strange problem though. Like in Little trouble, when a lot of rockets are exploding, my whole screen shakes. Jumps around. The latest drivers appear to have fixed this. At a quality setting, I still get 40+FPS in the worst situations. At the speed setting, I average around 90-110FPS or more.

i have not had one problem with my ati card 9700pro and feel i got it when was recently released for 305.00 i think thats a great price for what the card does and one more thing. nothing is really pushing the card yet to what it is capable of. want my suggestion? buy a 9500pro as it is just as good as 9700pro(same core just will run a little slower but has same technology) as it's ony around 200.
i am more enthused to see how the new sis/via video card performs which was stated to be faster than 9700pro and only cost under 100. this will be a good thing for us the consumers as you will be able to run all games for low price. even if it comes 2000 points less than a 9700pro--for 100 bucks thats great.

Those benches show it well - the FX is faster, but at what cost? Dollars, degrees, and wattage. As tempting as it is for someone who has been holding off, waiting to get a new toy, I think I'd at least have to wait until the ATI rv350 hits, or at least until lots of people have the FX, and start reporting back how they like it, possible troubles it causes, etc. Plus, if the Via/Sis card comes out and really smokes, you want the option to choose. If I had a GF2 of some kind, or maybe even a low GF3, I might want to upgrade to something, but I Think it'd be $270 for a 9700 Pro, or a GF4 for $200, or even a 9500 Pro for less than $200 instead of a $400+ FX.

Some more FX reviews:
Extreme Tech (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,846356,00.asp)
Hard[OCP] (http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NDIx)
I love Anandtech! (http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=1779&p=1)
Hexus (http://www.hexus.co.uk/review.php?review=497&page=1)
And here is a pretty bleak conclusion from AnandTech, but go ahead and look, lots of good benchmark comparisons with the 9700:
ATI has not been sitting idle all this time, and progress on the R350 core has been coming along quite well. We proved early on that the 0.15-micron R300 core could reach speeds of up to 400MHz, and with the GeForce FX NVIDIA has established that shipping cards with 800MHz - 1GHz memory is feasible, if ATI can put together a R350 with specs close to what we're implying then even a driver-tweaked FX will not stand a chance. NVIDIA has told us that the GeForce FX will be in stores next month, and we'd expect R350 in about a month following that. It will be a close race, but what ATI has going for them right now is a much more mature driver set than NVIDIA for their flagship GPU. The 3+ month advantage ATI had in bringing the R300 into production and to market gave ATI a much bigger advantage than just being the king of the hill for a while, it gave them quite a bit of time to fine-tune and optimize their drivers for this very occasion; this is a luxury that ATI has not had previously but they have made excellent use of it today.
NVIDIA's focus at this point is NV31 and NV34, after all, that's where the money is. The small percentage of the market that will go after the NV30 will not make or break NVIDIA, but should ATI compete like this in other market segments then there will be cause for worry. As we mentioned at the start of our GeForce FX Preview - "Kudos to ATI."

I always like getting insight from 'Da Man' himself. And, since he is torn betwenn the NV30 and the R300, I really want to see the R350.
At this point there is no way I can afford a new card anyway, so I have the luxury of waiting. It is interesting to watch how things are unfolding though.

Yeah, I have a GF4, I'm not on the market, either. Which is cool by me, I like my current card, and I think they'll have to revamp the Dustbuster (NV30) for me to want it badly.

I started out to get $199 TI 4200, but they were out, so I got a $299 TI4600. Then I had some problem with it, don't remember what. I think it turned out to not be the card, but after swapping it and then exchanging up to the 9700 Pro, just got tired of going back to that store. :drink: Really shouldn't have spent the $399, but oh well, life's a bitch, then you marry one. :oooo:
I am very happy with the 9700 Pro, except for one thing. My MB has a 4X AGP port and I just dying to get a new one with an 8X AGP port. :wootrock:

You know, I really have to hand it to ATI, they made one darn solid card; able to scream with nearly any AA or Aniso-filtering you throw at it, at higher res than my monitor will deliver, and it seems it will weather the FX pretty well, due in large part to it's wider memory path. I hope you're happy with your 9700 Pro, while I clunk along on my GF4 4400!

My, how it shifts so quickly! Not so long ago, nVidia was the very little brother to 3DFx, which was the intel of 3D video, and ATI was an OEM and integrated video maker, not even a blip on the 3D radar. Now, 3DFx is a shoebox on the shelf of a broom closet in the nVidia offices, and ATI has the brightest and strongest armor in the land. ATM. :WTF:
