Half-Life 2 Demo Coming Today at 1:00 p.m. PST

A free demo of Half-Life 2 will be released later today. Featuring some of the
amazing digital actors and physical gameplay that has made Half-Life 2 the leading contender for Game of the Year 2004, the demo takes players through some of the early levels of the game and later transports them to the area of the game known as Ravenholm. Its just Valve's service to download games and updates and also verify retail games. The Steam service itself does not take that much to download, not by a long shot, it is just recommending that much because it knows you will be downloading games which will be under the Steam folder on your HDD.

I highly recommend downloading the demo. Steam is not the end of the world that many uninformed gamers claim it is.

Thanks for the info Sal, i have been looking forward to a demo of this before i buy the full game.
