Here are some handy console commands. If you edit your Quake4config file and add this line to the end, set com_allowconsole "1", you can pull down the console with just the ~ key.
seta com_fixedTic "-1" - This uncaps the framerate in single player. It is locked at 60fps in SP. This makes no difference in MP.
seta com_showFPS "1" - Shows FPS.
