only small idea: your desktop and internet explorer and windows explorer are one kind of program, explorer.exe with different parametres, i guess. virus maybe changed explorer.exe, but i think thats impossible, becouse its core of windows and thats alwas in use. you cant edit files which are in use. dont know... like you said, on c:\ is one *.html file, and its your desktop. if you would delete content and make it read-only, your desktop will have grey color. it means somewhere in windows are options how turn desktop back to image, but i didnt found it even in registers.

sry if i didnt helped you, but you know its hard to resolve... GL with that

THE guide:

Get the antispyware from microsoft (downloadable at the microsoft page) if u have the legal version of windows or otherwise by someone else who has a legal version...

Or go to www.hitmanpro.com collected most of the antispyware software and bundled it in one package.

For manual installing go to http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/, www.lavasoft.com (ad-aware personel) for the antisoftware wich u want.

For antivirus go to http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm , or www.bitdefender.com (one of the best I think) for an online scan.

If all didn't work, then u have made ur own virus some way

Ow, and get firefox :)

Hey moho, follow my instruction url as previously suggested. I think I have there, restart the computer, f8 & boot into safe mode, open up your windows folders, view options and specify details, hidden & system files. sort by date, and delete everything suspicious (ini dat log files are ok, dll & exe are not) that lists a create date of about when your infection started. If you have not installed recently, you should be fine. if you have installed stuff recently, no biggie, just reinstall it if it doesn't work. do the same in the windows\system folder and also the program files folder. The windows files are going to have dates of last year, the infection files from the time you got infected. i did this today to nuke some stuff my daugher picked up. that was after adaware and spybot came clean.... this latest garbage is invisible and additionally autodownloads sh1t to install on your computer.

Try McAfee Stinger (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/McAfee_AVERT_Stinger/1040919764/1). Its a great little virus remover in a small download.

Hope this helps.

WARNING:
DON'T USE HITMAN PRO

It does more harm, according to the "Hijackthis cleaners", when theres is a problem they always start with: first remove that hitman pro ****.

If you think Windows Internet Explorer played a part in your getting that virus, you might want to download a different browser, like Opera.

http://www.opera.com/download/

Do this along with running a firewall and anti virus/spyware program (of course).

do yourself a favor and just do a clean install. No matter what you do their will be pieces there which could make your system hackable along with spyware that key logs.

Do not waste time trying to repair it because it will be a lot quicker doing a clean install that you know is clean and will probaly run much better since you first had it.

I would agree with Biggs, with the ammount of crap your computer was host to for an extended period of time, you would be wise to back up your files and reformat
