Shipping: If you are going to list something for sale I would suggest using one of the site's about before hand to figure it's shipping cost. Trust me and I have learned this the hard way, you are already selling your item for less than you paid so miscalculating your shipping cost is not good. I've eBayed many items in the past year or so and found that the US Parcel Service's (US Post Office) rates to be the lowest. There are size and items limitations so check their rules.
Packing: I can not stress enough the need to pack items well. How you see the person at the shipping office handling your item is not necessarily how it will be handled when you are not watching. Here's a few tips that i've learned from eBaying to help you.
- Double box really fragile items with the item in it's box, then surrounded in filler packing material inside of a bigger box. This gives the box some crush room before damage is done.
- Plastic grocery store bags and wadded up newspapers make excellent filler packing material.
- Pretty much everyone shreds documents, instead of throwing it away, stuff that into a plastic grocery store bag, then tie it up using the handles.
- Styrofoam peanuts are outrageously expensive, if you have of that packing Styrofoam that surrounds TVs, VCRs, etc ..., break that stuff up or cut it up with a electric carving knife. With the amount of stuff I ship i've had to make trips to electronic stores like Best Buy, Circuit City, etc ... they throw that stuff away. You might have to look around back of the store to get them and yes i'm talking about near the dumpsters area but i've saved a ton of $$$ considering those peanuts cost close to $20 for a bag the size of a 13 gallon trash bag. Depending on it's size you can easily use a bag up shipping just one item, so figure that cost into your sale and could be very well paying for someone to take your item.
- Grocery stores and liquor store are a great sources for boxes.
- U-haul sells a good assortment of boxes if you need so bigger one. Some self-storage businesses sell U-haul's boxes so check the ones around you. Figure this into your shipping cost, forget and you will be sorry.
