That was a pretty interesting read. I'm not much of an early adopter though, I just upgraded from Win98se to XP like 7 or 8 months ago so when y'all get the bugs worked out of Vista let me know. :D
I really don't see anything compelling here. There will be an XP skin that looks just like Aero Glass shortly after Vista's release. Actually the only thing that compelled me to buy XP was that I needed it for SLI. Otherwise I was perfectly happy with Win2K.
Assuming it comes out late 4Q 2006, the public beta :P will run till mid-summer 2007, and then it may be stable and supported (drivers) enough to start considering. XP will be supported for a few years yet. When I have to upgrade to Vista I will, but I'm thinking that's probably not going to be until the 08-09 timeframe (OMG I'm getting so old. :bawling: ).

there is already an aero glass look for xp. There is a program that can make windows have all the same settings. It's called Vista transformation Pack and I gave it a look but I did not like the side bar(neither did the firewalls) because of the 411 going in and out.

I found the transparency a bit weird at first. The sidebar is kind of annoying but I sort of got used to it. I'm going to try it out for a few more days...probably going to reinstall it.

I'm not sure I'd count on XP support lasting that long...MS is trying to push harder and harder for movement...For instance, they just stopped supporting 98 very recently, and already they've set a date (i think june-ish) to stop supporting 2000.
My dad clung to 98 like nobody's business, and my machine came bundled w/ XP, so I never got a proper taste of 2000, but from what I've messed w/ it, it does seem like a nice OS. The XP eyecandy is just that. XP is great for ma & pa smith that want a computer to check the e-mail with. It's pretty and it's full of helpful bubbles that explain everything. For a user of more than novice standing w/ a computer, though, a lot of it just gets in the way and 2000 was a much more concise, professional version (though I like the pretty start bar :P ).
I really think that the biggest argument between 2000 and XP is purely preference. The OS-es themselves are pretty much updated in unison, and everything that works on 1 will work on the other.

Hey Soul please hook us up with a screenshot if you don't mind Well I decided to uninstall it already. It didn't have everything from the real Vista like the new search ability and game section. Anyways though, here are some screenshots from other people.

It normally doesn't come with that black toolbar and the menu like that. I'm just guessing they d/led it from somewhere or something...

oOOooOO! Look at the transparent start menu. Seriously, this is not different enough from XP to get remotely excited about. Microcrap threw in eye candy to glorify their "new" OS just to attract public attention. I bet half the new features won't even be included in the release. Yes I'll be upgrading to Vista just to take advantage of the 64-bit functions but this is nothing revolutionary as maybe some of us would have hoped.
On the other hand its always nice to have and be able to tinker with a new MS OS, they are user friendly and have some great features. All I really want is acessability/easy management. Keep the transparent windows and fancy colors.
I actually found this new feature somewhat interesting. Dunno if this can benefit everyone but seems pretty nifty.
Taken off MS Vista site.
"Windows Vista introduces a new concept in adding memory to a system. USB flash drives can be used as External Memory Devices (EMDs) to extend system memory and improve performance without opening the box. Your computer is able to access memory from an EMD device much more quickly than it can access data on the hard drive, boosting system performance. When combined with SuperFetch technology, this can help drive impressive improvement in system responsiveness.
EMD technology is both reliable and secure. You can remove an EMD at any time without any loss of data or negative impact to the system; however, if you remove the EMD, your performance returns to the level you experienced without the device. Wear on the USB drive is not an issue when using it as an EMD. A unique algorithm optimizes wear patterns, so that a USB device can run as an EMD for many years, even when heavily used. Finally, data on the EMD is encrypted to help prevent inappropriate access to data when the device is removed."

EMD's, uh, yeah. Try getting 2 gigs of ram instead and disable the drive caching, that blow the shiz out of that EMD nonsense. As for the beta, I had tested an early copy. It screws the hell out of the ownerships and permissions of the system files, so I still have a bunch of those files on my spare drive. I think I am going to have to reformat it to get rid of it. Anyways, the main thing I see from vista is hopefully that they seperate the user workspace from the application workspace from the os workspace. I know they are doing the first and last, I hope they are implementing the second. In XP if you change your acct to a limited user, you are pretty secure, or can be. But nobody runs that mode, as it is really weak and useless. In vista, if you install crap all over the place and bomb out your system, you should be able to make a new login and have all that crap gone. that is the seperation of the different types of workspaces. If they do this well, then it will be a worthwhile upgrade. if it is just more bullcrap, where installs, authorized or not, have to get put on the same level as os files, well, that will be a disappointment.

Windows Vista....M$'s latest attempt to control every aspect of your life. Have you heard that non-signed drivers will not work with Vista? Ridiculous. They are going to make a real issue out of the Digital Rights Management crap they added quietly in XP.

Unsigned drivers setting can be changed but I dont think this is that bad of an idea. A lot of stability in thpast was blamed on the os but the fact is some manyfacturwers did or do not follow the guidelines. It can be bad though if a driver is not updated much in case there are bugs but it may weed out the crappy companies.
The rest I will agree with. DRM is a waste and only makes the platform unfriendly when using multiple applications that have their own rules to the media.
Until we have a choice, this is what we will have to deal with not just in our software but hardware aswell. Our televisions and other aplliances are already full with this drm crap and other property rights. It will only get worst. I hope people make an example that this will not be tolerated and not buy any of this. I actually think all these limits being put on us will only cause more illegal stuff. Take the Sony escapade for example.

DE spelled "ridiculous" wrong. :P
I wonder how much pressure MS is putting on game companies to NOT release Linux versions...:hmmm:
