Is there a good (and free) screen recorder out there that'll record all screen activity, including gaming? Also, does anyone knows how to convert an AVI file over to an MPEG? I read somewhere on the net that I'd need am MP43 file to decompress?

Fraps?

That's the only one I know of and the free version of it has a ad that shows on the screen so either get the full version or learn how to crop it out.

Fraps works well. Just tell us what exactly you plan to do with the footage and I can offer some advice as to how to go about doing it.

I want to use it to record all my online gaming, particularly Sam SE, and Sam 2. I downloaded Fraps last night and took it for a spin. I did notice the watermark on the top of the screen, but what gets me is it only records for 30 seconds(??!). They want $38 for the full version. I just wanted FREE that I can work with. ZD Soft Screen Recorder does a good job recording screen activity, but it does not do too well at recording online gamimg. Maybe someone can download this prog and tell me what I might be doing wrong (ZD Soft Screen Recorder); Fraps is cool, but I want something that'll record more than 30 secs..... eventually, I'd like to take my recordings of my online gaming encounters, and burn them to DVD.

It's been a while since I played Sam, but Sam has it's own built in demo recorder. I don't know the commands to make it work, but there is surely someone here who can assist you.

Can someone please post the commands or is it not good for what he is wanting to do?

Ya know, Shogun, I forgot about that demo record feature on Sam; hmmmm.... what format does it saves to? Can I access it from the Program Files/Croteam/Serious Sam SE folder?

It saves them with a .dem extension.

How to record and view them:

I will not copy and paste someone else's work and although I HATE to send you there.

Excellent Source for open source free progys for different platforms that are developed or like most the progy's in a continual development process !

SourceForge (http://sourceforge.net/)

This might be something that would fit your needs, free win 32, open source progy, taksi 0.5

Its uncompressed screen/video capture ! But if i remember right it doesnt capture sound and think it captured in avi format ?? But you could probably add sound n change format if you wanted later.
SourceForge Screenvidcap (http://sourceforge.net/projects/taksi)

They got lotsa neat stuff to chk out there, open source stuff that would probably aid in other vid/mov/splice/format conv./etc, its a regular cornucopia :)

hope that was of some help to ya Mpulse
