IMPORTANT: I need some people to please test my install steps and make sure they are correct and make notes to what needs to be changed or added. I'm 99% sure it is correct but want to make sure.

GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It is FREE, no spyware, no nagware, no nothing! I've been playing around with it and it is pretty close to Photoshop and you can not beat the price. ;) I have Photoshop 5.5 & CS, Macromedia Fireworks installed and it has not bothered them so it is safe to install. If you want to learn this stuff and are low on $$$ or just like FREE stuff, this program is for you.

As you can see it is loaded with the usual tools.

Installing GIMP:
1) Make a folder on your desktop or someplace else that you can remember to download two files to.
2) Go here http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html
3) Download The GIMP for Windows (version 2.2.11) (Click "Select download mirror" and pick a server near you)
4) Windows XP users download GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment (version 2.8.9, for Windows 2000 and newer; updated installer) (Click "Select download mirror" and pick a server near you)
5) Go to where you downloaded those files to and unzip them, you have run the "GTK Runtime Environment" file first, it is named gtk+-2.8.9-setup-1.exe so double click it.
6) Go to where you downloaded those files to and run the other file which is the GIMP setup file named gimp-2.2.11-i586-setup.exe so double click it to install.
7) Most of the questions it will ask you during the install just take the defaults so just hit ENTER or NEXT and move on after reading the questions. IMPORTANT: It is going to ask you two questions during the install like (1) Which file types to associate with GIMP? Do not select any, just hit ENTER or NEXT. (2) How much ram to assign to the program? The default was 128 megs, I bumped it to 256 since I have 1 gig of ram. 1/4th of your system ram I believe should be plenty so adjust to fit your situation.
8) That is it, you are done.

I was going off memory and as far as I know that is everything. If you run into problems or it is different than I said please post so I can edit this post.

I have not tried the "GIMP Animation Package (version 2.2.0)"
