A while back I needed a background graphic for a signature, the character render that I was using that was going to be in the foreground was from a video game and all of the backgrounds I found were actual photos which just didn't look right because of the sharpness. I wish I would have known about this tip back then because I could have used one of those photo images then used this tip to make it look more like a screenshot from a video game so that it worked better with the foreground render.
Tip: You can play with adjusting the Radius to 4.0 to vary the effect.

These before and afters are not that great, but you can get the idea if you look at the backgrounds or look at the pics in the tut:
