for the splitting the woman in half, some have suggested it is two people (a midget and a woman with a disability). This can be seen in that he supports her head from the time she sits on the bench to when she lays all the way back, he doesn't do that for the first woman. Look at the billowy skirt, the strange body shape of the woman, the wide midsection, the darkness on the bench...

It was first done in a stage audience, after running a person through a saw blade (never any blood of course), and having them return to the seat, where they 'split' with the two parts going in different directions. So many people were freaked out that they didn't repeat the trick.

first off, for televised tricks, there is often no real 'audience'. It will be a group of people working together to achieve a particular effect. secondly, what they show on tv is often not what actually happens, or may not include additional things that make the 'illusion' possible. For example, some years back a magician locked himself in a chest of a building to be demolished. He managed to escape minutes before the building was exploded. This occured in charlotte (where I lived at the time). The magic trick was done the day before the building was due to be demolished. so some clever film editing and misdirection and it looks way more interesting than it was.

a second example is where they made the status of liberty disappear on live tv. well, take an audience, put them on a big rotating platform, have two helecoptors hold up a sheet that obscures view of the statue. then rotate the platform and the helecoptors in unison. at 180 degrees, have the helicoptors drop the sheet. the statue is gone. (now behind you). looks damn good for tv. but the audience was all in on it....
