So I'm tossing around the idea of picking up a laptop.

This would be a companion to my desktop which will still run just about anything, so I don't need anything high-end.

This would primarily be used for light gaming (Nothing cutting edge - that's what the desktop is for), wireless internet access so I can get my GameMecca fix, and just general duty crap.

I'm thinking something able to run SSFE/SSSE and maybe CivIII type graphic duty at the max.

Any suggestions? I've not even LOOKED at laptop stuff before, so it's like a whole new world for me. I'm not even sure how the mobile chips compare these days for crying out loud.

Help me!

Bingo my brother brough over his dell which had a dell duo core chip in it and I was impressed considering he got it for 11oo bucks with savings. You need to look for those deal. It had an ok vga also which was ati200 which is similiar to 9600 card. If you want to do lite gaming I would suggest looking for the best vga instead of looking for best cpu. If 64 bit is important then you should just look into AMD because intel offers only 32 bit in mobil processor. If you are looking just for a laptop to do office work I would say look for the cheapest laptop and maybe add ram to it when you get it. Some can be found for 500-600 bucks which is pretty good for mobility. Frags and pures laptop were pretty sweet and the got them for good prices. Their laptops are faster then most desktops in gaming (my e-machines/gateway is still better until it comes to the video card).

Speaking of gateway, they usually have good laptops with good vga which are very reasonable. Ask pure about the one he got for his lady. 15"4 wide screen crystal clear, and turion chip.

I think the dual core chips are the way to go along with the ability of 64 bit. I think you may want to run vista next year so make a wise descision. This time around there will be plenty of 64 bit support.

Thanks a bunch for the tips.

I'm poking around now. I'd like to stay sub-800 bucks at the max, especially since this would be part-time use at best.

I'll let you know if/when I make a choice!

I would avoid Toshiba, a friend of mine says her company uses them, and not reliable at all.

Really? You didn't like it?

I'm curious to hear more. I bought my desktop from them, and I still love it even 2 years later. I've also sent a couple other folks to them for desktops.

However, I've never done any laptop business with them, so I'm particularly curious to hear what you didn't like?

Well I know many people and companies who are using it and are very pleased with it.

Toshiba has had great reviews for the past few years and have been making them lately much better, I still would go with Dell or Toshiba.
