Recently, Valve released results from data that Steam has gathered involving episode 1. Those results included things like where people were dying the most, what percentage of people were completing the game, etc.
Here they are: http://www.steampowered.com/stats/ep1/

Well they've used those results to make small modifications to the game to improve gameplay for people: http://megagames.com/news/html/pc/valvespiesforimprovements.shtml

I'm not sure how I feel about this particular use. If people are having difficulty getting through a part, then need to practice and beat it, not have valve make it easier. Also, you can change the difficulty in game at any point. For me, the part they're referring to was the only part that was truly challenging in the game. It had a good pace, but that was the 1 area that I must have tried 30 times before I beat it...and they just made it easier! Even if you don't like this one thing, though, I think it forecasts that there could be very cool, helpful uses for the technology down the road.

Steam isn't populair as a startup program, but I must admit... They do care about their products, maybe not the right way but they do
