I'm passing on a email that I got from eBay that has to do with your future use of the internet. You can sit by and let it happen or you can make your voice heard by clicking on the links below and following the instruction there. It's up to you.

As you know, I almost never reach out to you personally with a request to get involved in a debate in the U.S. Congress. However, today I feel I must.

Right now, the telephone and cable companies in control of Internet access are trying to use their enormous political muscle to dramatically change the Internet. It might be hard to believe, but lawmakers in Washington are seriously debating whether consumers should be free to use the Internet as they want in the future.

Join me by clicking here -- http://www.ebaymainstreet.com/netneutrality -- to send a message to your representatives in Congress.

The phone and cable companies now control more than 95% of all Internet access. These large corporations are spending millions of dollars to promote legislation that would allow them to divide the Internet into a two-tiered system.

The top tier would be a "Pay-to-Play" high-speed toll-road restricted to only the largest companies that can afford to pay high fees for preferential access to the Net.

The bottom tier -- the slow lane -- would be what is left for everyone else. If the fast lane is the information "super-highway," the slow lane will operate more like a dirt road.

Today's Internet is an incredible open marketplace for goods, services, information and ideas. We can't give that up. A two-lane system will restrict innovation because start-ups and small companies -- the companies that can't afford the high fees -- will be unable to succeed, and we'll lose out on the jobs, creativity and inspiration that come with them.

The power belongs with Internet users, not the big phone and cable companies. Let's use that power to send as many messages as possible to our elected officials in Washington. Please join me by clicking here http://click2.ebay.com/10793148.465060.0.68092 right now to send a message to your representatives in Congress before it is too late. You can make the difference.

Thank you for reading this note. I hope you'll make your voice heard today.

Sincerely,

Meg Whitman
President and CEO
eBay Inc.

P.S. If you have any questions about this issue, please contact us at government_relations@ebay.com.

I'd like to see some documented evidence that bills to change this kind of thing are actually in the works, via 1 place just saying it is. I frankly find this a bit hard to believe.

If the email didn't use your name in it (as opposed to "Dear Ebay user" or something to that effect), you can safely assume this is junk mail and hit the delete key. I don't know whether this one is legit or not, but the links don't exactly scream "legitimate."

EDIT: This is a scam if I have ever seen one. They are phishing for your ebay ID and will likely ask for you to login (i.e. harvest your password). Just say no.

believe an arguing senator said something to the extent that the internet is like a pipeline and only so much water can go through it at once:rolleyes:

Someone on another forum posted that eBay would not ask for your "eBay ID". I'm not sure if it's a spoof or not so to be on the safe side I wouldn't enter it in and I would just contact whoever in the government directly on your own.

Here are a few links that someone gave me that pertains to this:

Sho, you made me nervous so I did a little digging on my own..

http://www.bivingsreport.com/2006/the-potential-ebay-lobbying-juggernaut/

EBay combines its politics-as-usual approach with more creative grass-roots tactics. It keeps its membership informed about regulatory issues as soon as they crop up, using mass e-mail messages and a year-old Web-based initiative called ‘eBay Main Street,’ which sends out ‘legislative alerts’ and provides letters that users can send to government officials. At any one time there are 89 million items being sold on eBay and the site has 193 million registered users. 193 million registered users! To put that in perspective, 122 million people voted in the last U.S. Presidential election.

When you register for eBay you are required to give them your full address and phone number, in addition to your email address. This information allows eBay to easily get sophisticated demographic data about each user: they know your state, your Congressional District, your county, and even your State Legislative District. In addition, eBay has access to your account history. They know how many items you’ve bought and sold, and how much money you’ve made or spent on EBay. eBay knows where you live and exactly how you use their service. And they have this information for ever single member.

 Yup..I'd say E-bay's got a little clout behind them...
