Is this thing any good? I don't know much about Nvidea, much les onboard video. I was always under the impression that it was pretty crappy, anything onboard is except sound. However, i'm going down the list in Everest and noticing how many different things this sucker supports, and that it has a total of 256megs of memory.

so is this thing better than more radeon 9600?

It should do well for SSSE and UT 2k4. But, keep in mind, it only has 4 pipes. It's not a great card, but it's solid for a laptop.

Is that 256 dedicated video RAM or shared ram that it's stealing from your system?

Shared ram is horrible for 2 reasons: 1) the data will most likely be traveling considerably farther to get to system ram than it would if it had it's own ram soldered in next to it and 2) It means your system is running on less RAM. A 256 meg dedicated video card on a laptop is probably not gonna happen, at least without you paying big $$, but here's hopin' that you got one!

And you paid big $$ for it, too, huh?

He only got a laptop for school, and is updating his main machine, so I'm betting that he doesn't have 256 dedicated on his.

I have the same on my dell xps :P and I didn't have to pay for it, it was standard when they sent me a replacement. Got 512 on my desktop :)

other than going and finding a hardware engineer, any way I can give my card its own memory?
