I have a friend computer that won't boot. It's missing the file vgaoem.fon.

The question I have is can I use my winxp pro disc to try to get that file onto that computer?

Also, I don't think I can, but if I have the CD code, can I put win xp pro on it, if it was registered under home edition?

Thanks for the help!

I do believe bud, if you can locate that missing file on your XP disk, you should be able to insert the windows XP disk into his system, boot off it, go into the trademarked (:P) Windows XP Recovery Console and copy the file off the disk. The simply paste it into whatever directory its missing from :)

you can do this in many ways.

1--boot off cd and choose repair which will take you to command prompt. read instructions step by step.

2--take out thee hard drive and put into your system and just copy the file right into the directory.

I think option two is the easiest and fastest.

I did a search for that file on my system and it didn't find anything (I am on xp pro, the one I am working on is xp home)

I tried doing a repair, but I'd get a registery error and then I couldn't do anything :( Got the same thing when I was going to format it, and it was searching for previos version of windows too.

Sorry Grimmy, I did not look at the actual file you were referring to. It does appear you do have to do a repair with the same version of windows. Also was this install an upgrade over another OS?

Now do you need an oem copy of windows xp home or pro? I can zip up a copy and during repair you just type in the cd key on the computer.

I will trun on msn messenger in case you need the zipped os. My upload is pretty fast at 5mb so should take too long. All you will need to do is burn onto a cd and do the repair.

Ok, I pulled this HD out, and hooked it to a rig and ran McAfee. 2 viruses, 1 worm, and 12 trojans later and 2299 infected files, it now gets further then it did before. I get to the window xp home loading screen, but then it reboots.

Any ideas?

McAfee said it cleaned everything, but if I could get to desktop, I am definately going to run it again!

Grimmy, if you were going to reformat it anyway, pull all files off of it that you wanted to save onto a cd. Set his computer to boot first off of the A: drive and go to this site to download Bcwipe Jetico (bcwipe) (http://www.jetico.com/index.htm#/bcwipe.htm)
format a floppy as a system disk and copy the BCWipePD.exe file onto it. Fire up that computer, and when you get it to the A: prompt run the program with the parameters set to a single pass wipe. That will take that HD back to where it was when it left the factory. It wipes the fat and everything else.

Well I was trying to save all that I could, without having to copy the stuff to my computer. More of a challenge to try to save everything and recover the disc and getting working again and not lose much. Well I tried, and took the easy way out...format c: yes! :D

Anyways, I got a disc that worked and ended up reformatting it completly. Buh bye HP crap! Hello fresh XP install :)
