If you're looking for a good RTS game, try Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War...very different style, but very very good.
Rather than gathering resources, your resources accumulate over time on their own. However, controlling strategic points of the map will cause your resources to accumulate much faster. The gameplay is unique and very fun. The multiplayer is incredibly fast paced - a ton of fun!

I've yet to play the expansion demo that I linked to, but it should be the same basic game. DoW itself is very addicting.
