What I specifically want to do is record the Cbs evening news for a project. But the newscast is played through an online window. I will be using the newscast to describe how commentary effects the meaning of the images used.

I used fraps and it only would record 30 sec and then create a new file.

Sometimes you can simply do a View->Page Source in your browser and then find the link to the video in the code. Copy and paste the URL into the browser address field and see if you can download it that way. It works on some sites, but not others. Worth a try though.

There was some program I used a while back to capture video from YouTube, you pasted in the URL and it captured it as a FLV file and it seems like it would work at several sites. It works kind of like what Sirc is saying because it pulls the video from your browser's temp. internet folder.

I can not remember the name of it though and the quality was pretty poor

Very nice, did not know about this, thanks Sho, Bingo

Fox you can also try this, I used it a lot and works great. Its good for capturing up to 5 mins at a time in the free version.

ZD Soft
Screen Recorder

Screen recording is the advanced form of screen capture. Screen capture software captures screenshots and save them as individual still image files. Screen recording software records screen changes and save them as a single video file. An animated screen recording video is much more powerful than a set of screenshots in explaining what happened on the screen. ZD Soft Screen Recorder allows you to record entire screen, a region or a window. After you press the hotkey to start recording, it minimizes itself to the system tray and runs in the background. It starts to record every change on the screen to the video file you configured to save. It also captures the system sound to the video file if the sound recording option is enabled. Press the same hotkey again to stop recording. Then the screen recording is finished

****UPDATE*****

Thank you all for the suggestions. But I still have one major problem. Most of the freeware versions only last 5 mins for recording. Does anyone know of a recorder that will last approximately 20 mins that would be great. I appreciate all of your help.
