From what I've heard it still remains a very challenging field to get into. However, with the proper education and the increasing budgets we could soon be seeing better games real soon.

It's especially difficult to find good programmers since the code needed for the new games gets more complex as hardware improves and allows for a greater number of instructions to be executed over a shorter period of time. I'm sure we will be seeing more games based on a given engine and it will be up to the developers how they implement a given engine (whether it's for graphics, gameplay/physics, or a mixture of both) into their game. Because coding is ALOT faster and easier when you have a set of given functions that only require for the programmer to set certain parameters for.

So leave the engine developers to do their part while the actual game makers can set out to make playable, bug-free, visually and narratively rich games.
