Much of the research for the current railgun weapons was done right here in Austin at the Pickle Research Center (associated with the University of Texas). When I was in 8th grade, I took a field trip to their labs and they did a test fire of the gun there. The projectile went through about 2 feet of a solid block of aluminum (we saw previous blocks as the test unit was too hot). The test fire shook the ground pretty good. They had to empty the building to do each test fire.

The issue back then was where to get the immense amount of energy needed to fire the weapon. This lab had a huge capacitive battery setup (picture a huge warehouse that is "the battery") that provided an insane amount of current for this project at the lab.

Interesting stuff.
