You mean like tinkerbell? There may be more than one belief but a long time ago I read somewhere that fairies were believed to be fallen angels too good to go to hell. I know you and Bain are very wise about mythological creatures and could tell me more if you have any other fairy info.

OK the word Sidhe is celtic and means something like "the nice folk" or "white folk" or fairy! It comes from the habit of mankind to call their fears with nice names so they don't seem to be that kind of a fear! Like BainSidhe stated above her name comes from the fairy of death the Bainsidhe or banshee! There are several other fairies and and most of them just try to lure people into their realm and by doing so mostly into death! Another popular name for the Sidhe is Elfes and "the Golden Folk"! In the believes of the ancient celtic people they are an older race than mankind and they play with peoples emotions and lifes for their own entertainment!

I knew you two would know! :D I remember Bain posting the meaning of her avatar but I had no idea that a banshee was also in the same category of the traditional "winged" fairy. Have you ever in your travels heard of what I posted or have I been living a lie? :bawling:

To add some more info on Bains name it comes - as stated above - from the Fairy of death who mostly appears as an howl in the winds or as an old women washing bloody clothes or carrying an severed head which shows the face of the one seeing it!

U aren't liviing a lie u just live a modern way of seeing Fairies :D ! As most of surely u know that most ancient fairy tales were more blood filled and more scary than the modern types of fairy tales which are meant to entertain kids! In the ancient times they were supposed to teach people things about the dangerous world out there!

well howl in the wind is not really the right description for it. I read that when a banshee starts to cry it sounds really bad. It must be an awful sound. But it's also said that the banshee only appears to old irish families. I read some interesting stories about that topic but all in german  If anyone is interested I would translate them for u ;)

There's a saying in America...I almost think I shouldn't post this...but I will.

If a woman is very....into the sex she is having it's said she f**** like a banshee...is that related to those stories (perhaps they would you sex to lure someone into their realm?)

It may come from a Native American (Indian) story too, though, I don't know....

Saretta
02-18-2003, 10:27 PM
I think that's not related to the stories of the banshee at least not to the stories of the banshee from the celtic mysts I know of.

Edit: I may be that there are some newer stories where this is told but it doesn't belong to the original meaning/ funktion of a banshee.

Mr Clean
02-18-2003, 10:41 PM
maybe not....but it's certainly my favorite part of the banshee legend...
