You don't have to pay to play online. If you want the bonus matchmaking system and other features the Xbox Live Gold members receive you will have to pay a $49.99 yearly fee for the Games for Windows Live Gold service.

"The only things to which Silver-level players do not get access are matchmaking / multiplayer, game invites to or from friends, and multiplayer achievements. Silver-level players on Vista CAN join dedicated server games directly to play multiplayer matches."

The only thing that annoys me is that the game does NOT utilize DirectX 10 unlike bob said so it doesn't even have to be a Vista only game.
