What do you guys think of it? It is UBER slow on my box. So far it has not caught me. Unreal is just not as smooth as sam in game play. Something just doesn't grab me.

You.....n/m, this is a serious thread.

Your not the first person to say this. Wasn't there a thread somewhere that made mention of a way to smooth out the game...I'll try to find it and post a link, DL...

There is just something about this game I don't like. I didn't like Unreal 2k3 either. Not sure what it is.. but I don't like. Maybe it is the slow movement, or the weapons.

or the weapons.
that i think is what turned me off of the game.. the weapons just dont feel like they are doing anything, or just so piddley.

like the machine gun in ut2003 felt like a pea shooter.

but the graphics are good, its just .. hmm.. i dono.

I am kinda embarassed to say. But I know the contents under the hood are a big extent of my problem.

I have:

P3-800
256MB R
GeForce3 TI500 (at least this is decent)

I am upgrading to a beastly machine in about 1 - 2 months. Then I can pump up the graphics to max.

That is your problem. I run it on a 1ghz machine and it is just "ok" I have a 2.4 machine I need to put together. Overall though, I agree with you it just doesn't feel as fast. Unreal Tourney (the original) feels more like Sam to me than UT2003.

There's always Doom 3. :)

Ha.. I will really need a new box before that!

Dark the game is awesome.
Your system is barely enough for it.

I would run it on my CPU, but I dont wanna delete the stuff I have, if I do, I will replace most of it with Deus Ex ;).

I know what you mean, the game puts a crunch on my machine. You guys with 9700s and Pros, how does it play for you? I've gone down to 800X600 just to bring the frames up to a decent level, and it still goes down to 30-something outside!
I'm only a bit into it, and the thing I don't like is losing all my ammo every mission...is Isaak so tight he will only send me out with 75 in the assault rifle, or 16 shells for the shotgun? I came in with like 50-some shells, and go out with 16, he's clipping me. Otherwise, it's an OK SP FPS*. I think Undying was better made for story and flow.

I will have to try that one next.

As for Unreal II, it's the same old same old. Except prettier. Oh, and Aida is hot, LOL.

I'm not super impressed with it, and it is laggy (I'm not willing to turn down all the settings and miss out on the only thing that makes this game unique). But it's a nice change of pace. It's been a while since I played an FPS.

True. But SS is an exception to the rule. That is what originally brought us all together in the 1st place. :wootrock:

Not to completely derail this thread, but I think that game had me as close to being scared as I can be in a game. And, you can pick it up on the cheap now, it was cool.
Un2 is definitely about the pretty stuff, and I keep it at 32-bit, and high everything, but turned off/down the shadow settings, because it didn't seem to significantly improve things when I turned it all off. It bums me that I can't play at 1024X768, because it seems like that is the cutoff for really pretty rendering, and 800X600 gets that graininess in there. I'll try 4X AA at 1024, just to take some screen for wallpaper, but I know it will be close to a slide-show.
Which brings me to Doom 3. I ran the illegal beta - have since deleted it - and it crushed my system. As Carmack said, don't make judgements based on that version, and I will grant him that, but I don't see how it was built on the GF3 chipset. I know companies are trying to make great games that will utilize the best hardware features that are out there, but I wonder how many sales are lost because people just can't push it. Counter-Strike is the single most popular online FPS out there, with over 50,000 players, comparing to 5,000 for UT, and 5,000 for Q3, and then 5,000 for Wolfenstein, at one time, and a lot of it is due to CS's ability to run on older machines. Now, I really think CS blows chunks, I hate it, and I loved the team-based Wolfenstein, so it's not just the genre, but you can't deny it's popularity. I guess I'll have to save some clams for an R350 card, maybe even the mongo-style 9900 with 256 megs of RAM when Doom3 releases!

The only game that scared me was Aliens vs Pred. 2 single player playing as the marine. Undying was just creepy.

First of all Death-Dude, Counter-Strike is a mod. Valve later on saw its potential and started selling it (like they did with other mods as well, Gunmen Chronicles, Blue Shift, etc.) so you could play without having half life. THe reason it can run on older machines cause its based on an engine that was released 5 years ago (and that engine itself is based on the Quake1 engine but heavily modded). I have a game, Jedi Knight 1, came out in 97. Requirements? 90mhz cpu with like 16mb ram. Half Life's is probably close to that. I ran Half Life basicially perfect on my 200mhz mmx pentium 1 32mb ram with a voodoo3 2000 16mb.

The leaked alpha was definately not optimized at all, and was barely anything. Notice how it probably crahsed a bunch, and you had to use the console to even start a game.

I have Undying. The game is great, it WILL scare the hell out of you. When you get very far into the game, it looses it's "touch". You have too much ammo. Overall it's worth buying.

Yeah, I know it's a mod, I DLed it and ran it. My point was only that at least some of it's popularity was that it runs well on older machines, and runs well on the net. Of course, being a mod helped, too, as it was free, but you still had to have a copy of the retail game HL, or a stolen copy of it. Also, fueling it's popularity was the team-based angle of it. I really tip my hat to them, they made a great game, despite that I, personally, don't enjoy it.
As for Doom 3, I was just remarking that it was debuted with the GF3, and Steve Jobs had a big demo unveiling with Carmack, gushing about the new technologies that were here and coming, and showed what a game like D3 will look like on the new, incredible GF3 cards. I'm sure it will run much better than that leaked alpha, and I'll buy it day 1 regardless.
