Well soon AMD is about to release it's new chips. They are extremely late and many including myself have been a bit dissapointed. With less than 2 weeks left to see how how this chip is going to perform, many including myself have been not to happy withthe lack of anything being posted regarding the new core which is a true quad core chip. I know I have stated that I will not accept a chip that just beats out Intels core duo stuff by a small margin. For beingthis late I expect to see the reason I have supported AMD for over 10 years and opted for their platform over Intels.

That time is soon to show what the big fuss was all about. I admit i have started to lose faith in the little company that could but I also respect some of the reasoning for their actions when up against a company like Intel. At this time we can start to see some leaks now as AMD is starting to show there stuff off to just a few as long as NDA is signed. Under NDA, you can bet there will be a few that disregard it and pass some info along to sites that could care less about NDA and post info on their site to generate traffic which would do just that.

Today I stumbled across this http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=41970.

What is great is that people that are currently running an AMD chip based on socket AM2 will simply be able to upgrade their processors by popping one in the socket. A bios upgrade will probably be needed but usually that's not suprising. There will be a newer am2+ board ready to support the ht 3.0 also but i doubt it will be needed right away. You can get a AM2 board today for as low as 50 bucks today which is pretty good.

I guess we can expect more leaks which will inform us what we can expect from AMD. Goodie:thumbs:

Thats a great marketing strategy to keep the new chip in the old socket, especially if it performs well. People who own the board will flock to it and those that have non-am2 boards will gladly grab a cheapo board that handles the latest and greatest chip...which includes me :)

So there is a reason to switch from this 939 ancient board

it depends what you have in your socket 939. As I said when they first released the am2 board was wait. at that time the 939 was faster and still is depending what chip you are getting amd matching it to. Today the am2 chips are dirt cheap and the processors run very cool. At that time also ddr2 was very expensive where as today you can have 2 gigs ddr2 800 for under 100 bucks. I would not suggest buying any new ddr1 these days because it is obsolete to newer platforms.

Caged, I just put a media center tohether with AMD's new chipset. It has hdmi and an onboard grpghics that does pretty well for some games. It has an x2 3800 45watt chip in it and is basically going to feed into the LCD display I have in tv room to use as media and intenet on the couch. The whole thing cost under 400 bucks and silent as hell. A bargain that is upgradeable in the future.

You have to look at the sole purpose of your system before buying new or just simply upgrading. Neither will allow you to play better at any particular game as just about all systems today can handle the load. It matters these days what will do the job better and more efficiently. I have a particular design for just about every kind of computer. If it's games, I look mainly at the video card. If it's editing I look at cpu, memory and HD controller. for Media, I look at noise, size, and connectivity. Server, Raid controller, memory and OS.

Heya Biggs. Thanks for the info.

I've been thinking about what choices I might have upgrade-wise for my PC, and this sounds like something to keep my eye on.

I've been tossing around trying to see if I could find any cheap upgrades to my now aging system. At the time, it was something sweet I tell ya!

ASUS K8V DELUXE ALTHON 64 DDR400
AMD ATHLON 64 3000+ CPU
2 - CORSAIR 512MB PC3200 PC400 DDR
PC RADEON 9800 PRO 128MB DDR

It's definately starting to show it's age. I'm 99% sure that's the old 939 socket board, so that'd prolly have to go. Then just a matter of what to replace it with for the best value and a new Graphics Card. Jeez the whole PC thing really is a treadmill, aint it? lol :P

You know bingo, that system you have is still good enough to do everything. That's what I always liked about amd. You can easily make that a server and it will rock. Hell if you wanted to you can still use it as a game system by just purchasing a newer AGP card. Bottomline is everyone who had purchased the 939 got their few years of use. Today prices are so cheap and parts are throw aways pretty much becaus eof how cheap they are.

yeah the board has that 512mb chip on it built for vista and ready boost. I stopped using vista because it crippled my expensive hardware that makes a difference. My X-FI play was pretty useless in vista and I refuse to give up that power for a pretty desktop.
