View Full Version : Meet the neighbours: Is the search for aliens such a good idea?

The fact is, and this should have been obvious to all, that we do not know what any extraterrestrials might be like - and hoping that they might be friendly, evolved enough to be wise and beyond violence, is an assumption upon which we could be betting our entire existence.

The late Carl Sagan, the American astronomer who died a decade ago, also worried about so-called "First Contact". He recommended that we, the newest children in a strange and uncertain cosmos, should listen quietly for a long time, patiently learning about the universe and comparing notes. He said there is no chance that two galactic civilizations will interact at the same level. In any confrontation, one will always dominate the other.

It's likely that any creature we contact will also have had to claw its way up its own evolutionary ladder and may possibly be every bit as nasty as we are - or worse.

I felt like getting into something different but please stay with the subject and keep an open mind and not judge anyone’s believes. Thank you

What are your thoughts?

Humans are too young, as a whole. Most are not ready.

last time i checked, the biggest industries on our planet are ( in order )
* weapons ( number 1 without competition )
* oil
* drugs
* porn
* the consumption of food for the whole planet

sry to sound pessimistic about that, but i dont think we have good intentions in searching extraterrestrials. i think if we would ever get in contact with any other life form it wont be (hopefully) of any better kind than ourselves.. and then what.. :P

First contact will be in the form of a probe sent from another solar system. Once the probe is detected we will seize it, reverse engineer it, and send a similar probe back with a nuclear warhead. By the time they can respond we will have harnessed the power of ZPE (from sub-space) and be invincible.

I don't believe in what people think aliens are. (y'know, weird faces, dark oval eyes etc..) But i do believe there are many many many planets like Earth out there, with beings like us. And although lots of these planets may be at the same evolutionary stage as us; lots probably aren't. Thus creating planets simular to Earth with lots of us in different stages of evolution (Eg, we started as monkeys.. etc) and some of these may actually look like the aliens everyone thinks aliens look like, or even something thats all mutated and has like 300 arms and green skin. Y'never know, eh?

Space is so complicated. :rolleyes:
