This is a simple example and please don't cheat.
I thought it be fun to playing around with a teaser. hehehe

I will have much harder the next time I post.

Three lighthouses on three nearby islands flash their lights every evening. On one island, the light flashes every 45 seconds. The lighthouse on the second island has a light that flashes every 2 minutes. The third lighthouse flashes a light every 1 1/4 minutes. Suppose all the lights flash together at 8:35 p.m.

At what time will all three lights flash together again? :D

I will have the answer posted by tomorrow.

Answer: "?" <---- By tomorrow. hehehehe

45 sec = 3/4 min
1 1/4 = 5/4 min

I am leaving fro home in five minutes. SAS you better come back you hump or I am driving to Brooklyn.

EricC
10-12-2007, 12:23 AM
it's 9:05, change all the times to seconds instead of seconds + minutes and it's 45 seconds, 120 seconds, and 75 seconds. then you use third grade math skills to find out the LCM of those 3 numbers is 1800 which means the lights will flash every 1800 seconds or 30 minutes

ME BIGGD01
10-12-2007, 12:30 AM
Ahhhhh, you mean third grade math is what I am missing? It seems my math to come up with the solution was not so simple. I just sent this to my brother to see what he comes up with.

For some reason I think I am doing someones home work. Hey SAS are you taking another course?

ME BIGGD01

i think you ar all messing up on the first number when you do your math.

EricC
10-12-2007, 12:38 AM
Really isn't any room for discussion since there is no arguing that (1) 45 seconds = 45 seconds (2) 2 minutes = 120 seconds (3) 1.25 minutes = 75 seconds
(4) LCM of 45, 120, 75 = 1800 (5) 1800 Seconds = 30 minutes (6) 30 minutes after 8:35pm is 9:05pm

I hope I broke it down simple enough for your mind to be able to grasp it

SASQUATCH
10-12-2007, 03:01 AM
EricC and Wiper are correct.

The lights will flash together every 30 minutes, so the next time will be 9:05 p.m.

If you start by converting all the times to seconds, then the time intervals for the lights are 45 seconds, 120 seconds, and 75 seconds, respectively. The least common multiple of 45, 120, and 75 is 1800. So, all the lights will flash together every 1800 seconds, or 30 minutes.

I will post one again soon but it will be harder. hehehehe

BTW it isn't school lol

I read a lot lately and I read that it is important at my age to play games, like DAOC, Chess, read books, learn new things which I do a lot and more.
I will post something about to help simulate the mind and improve.

There are many different ways to be smart, and the steps to take toward that end are not limited to these. There are plenty of people who are book smart but street stupid. Remember that ultimately, being smart means taking interest in every aspect of life, from academics, to the arts, to communication and relationships.

Work on your memory. Having a good memory is often mistaken for true intelligence, and many researchers believe is actually necessary for high intelligence and education levels.

Listen. Spend less time talking and more time observing and listening. Firstly, this keeps you from saying stupid things without thinking them through. Secondly, by spending more time perceiving the world, you learn more about the world. Thirdly, examining a person's body language and facial expressions often tell a more complete story than their words alone.

Remember this is for fun it does not mean who is smarter but it helps to practice the mind

(4) LCM of 45, 120, 75 = 1800 (5) 1800 Seconds = 30 minutes (6) 30 minutes after 8:35pm is 9:05pm

I know that's kind of a silly question, but it's been way to long.

First you get prime factors which are:
45 = 3^2 * 5
120 = 2^3 * 3 * 5
75 = 3 * 5^2

Then you multiply the product of the highest power(3^2, 2^3, and 5^2, or 9, 8, 25) and get 1800

I just confimed this with my sister in law in california. She has her Phd and see's what I am saying.

SASQUATCH

Three lighthouses on three nearby islands flash their lights every evening. On one island, the light flashes every 45 seconds. The lighthouse on the second island has a light that flashes every 2 minutes. The third lighthouse flashes a light every 1 minutes. Suppose all the lights flash together at 8:35 p.m.

Ok here we go:
45 sec first light
2 mins on the second light which is 120 sec.
1 min = 60 * 2 sec = 120 sec
1 ¼ = 75 sec –
1 min = 60 + (1/4 * 60/1 = 15 sec) = 75 sec

You Convert 60 to 60/1 which is a improper fraction
Let me break it down –> 1/4* 60/1 = 15
Just to let you know in case that 60/1 * 1/4 you can lower the 60 and 4 by dividing it and get 60 will = 15 and 4 will = 1
so now 60/1 becomes 15/1 and 4 becomes 1/1.
Now times it 15/1 * 1/1 = 15 sec
So now you get 60 sec plus 15 sec = 75 sec

Now, multiply and you get 1800 sec which is 30 mins
1800 / 60 = 30 mins + 8:35
Answer 9:05

Bigg’s that problem the link you gave me he put down 11/4 when it means 1 ¼
That is why I think it is wrong.

Sorry I know it's a silly way to explain it but I am trying to make it really easy

ME BIGGD01

Well I don't mind not being able to see the year of a penny but I do fear of ever going blind. 2 weeks ago I missed the step coming into the house and tripped over the hanging part of the step. I had nothing to break my fall so I brace up and slammed the front teeth in to the screen door handle. Now that was pretty much a wake up call for me let alone a very very extremely painful experience as I broke the whole front grill. Maybe it's age thats blinding me or maybe I am just a clumsy fool but none the less I honestly feel age is catching me. Oh, teeth are fixed so the next time I go visit Goober and Co, I wont look like I live there.

Remember Bigg's that we don't play sports like we use to and so at times it will make us clumsy but trust me when I tell you that exercising for health, not muscle but just being healthy and most importantly keeping active like running and maybe even basketball or etc will help. The other thing is practicing the mind which is what many people don't do at our age. You can do the same things over, and over again which is not improving anything to stimulate the mind and that is why doing other activities that helps the mind provides to extend or improve.

For example if you use your right hand with the mouse browsing the net trying using your left hand.

Ready to think? (again :D)

You're walking down a road and end up at a T-crossing. One way will go to Hell and the other to Heaven. Only you don't know which way goes to Heaven.

At the T-crossing are standing two gnomes. You know that 1 always tells the truth and the other always lies. Ur allowed to ask 1 question, but of course: you don't know which of the 2 gnomes is answering.

Question:

What question should you ask to know which way is to Heaven (at least I assume you wanna go there)?

Edit:

Question 2:

How many times does the Earth turns around its own axes in one year?

Question 3:

A guy is going to visit his grandma in a city 60 km away. He drives 20 km/h toward and when he drives 30 km/h back home. What was his average speed during the hole traveling?

Question 4:

How much is 3+3*3 ? :D
