There were 18 members in the research group. ;)
8+13=21 subtract the 3 that went to both places, that leaves 18.

The way the question is asked is kind awkward....you can go several ways with the "either" and "3 went to both" ( in my eyes this is a conflict :D)
So the calculations can be:
8+13+ 3 (extra which went to both: the either part :P) = 24
8 + (13-3) (those who went to both) = 18
and if ya wanna know how many are in the either group:
(8-3) + (13-3) = 15 so u skip those who went to both

24 ! :D
If you went to both you're not a researcher.
8+13=21 researchers.

"Each member of a research group visited either the Virgin Islands or Hawaii. If 8 members went to the Virgin Islands, 13 went to Hawaii, and 3 went to both locations, how many researchers were in the group? "
fair point...still little strange since only the 8 are called members. If the 13 are then the 3 should be also. So the answer should be 8 then. Since it ain't "each researcher from the group visited either.."

Answer
Write out the information you were given:
Researchers who went to the Virgin Islands: 8
Researchers who went to Hawaii: 13
Researchers who went to both places: 3
The number of researchers who went to the Virgin Islands plus the number of researchers who went to Hawaii is 8 + 13, or 21.
In this tally, the three researchers who went to both places have been counted twice, so subtract 3 from the total: 21 - 3 = 18.
So, there were 18 researchers in the group.
Oscar(WCFD) was right the answer is 18:thumbs:
