I woke up this morning and downloaded a file I needed for work and saw that I was downloading at nearly 900kB/sec. I assumed that this was just some kind of caching deal as I've only ever had 3.5Mb down / 375kb up. So I ran a speed test at DSLreports. It tells me that I've got 8.0Mb down / 500kb up. So I run a few other speed tests (speakeasy for one). They say the same thing.

What a nice surprise for a Saturday morning. They more than doubled my download speed and bumped the upload up just a tad too. Nevermind that I'm paying $50/month for SuddenLink Cable internet (we don't have much else here just outside of Austin).

Man I wish Comcast would do that. I remember both you and I were with Roadrunner at one time, but they sold out to or were taken over by Comcast here, is SuddenLink who took over down there or did you switch?

Nah. I moved just outside of town where Time Warner doesn't service (they do about a stones throw away though...across the neighborhood). For now, this is my only choice other than DSL which would require a land line (which I don't have....I have Vonage).

SuddenLink apparently bought out Cox communications just before I got setup.

I'm with comcast and this is typical of the speeds I get when ever I run speed tests.
This is a lot higher than the advertised speed, don't know if they goofed on my account, if they did, I'm sure as hell not going to tell them. ;)

edit: I'm only paying for 6.0 dwn and 368 up

I noticed the same thing with my Comcast account a couple of months ago. Came across this article explaining the increase.

They must not have activated it here yet, although this is a better (slightly) than a test I ran a few weeks ago.

Thanks, I didn't know that.
On a side note, I hope the other ISP's up their speeds so comcast will keep giving us free upgrades.;)
