OUTLAWS BIOHAZARD

Hey I made this poll to ask everyone and anyone who would help me make a decision on which operating system I should use. Im currently running 2k but Im not sure if I should get XP or not! Im trying to make a very decent computer for a CG artist like myself in videogame design. I also would like to know anything about any hardware I should look into.
I voted for WinXP. I use Win2K, but that's because I need it for work. I'd probably use WinXP otherwise.

XP, I really don't like Windows 2000. Of course I have a tainted perception of it, because when it first came out I installed it on the system I had and nothing worked, and there were no drivers to be found at the time, so I took it off the HD and it now sits on the shelf with about an inch of dust on it.

That's not really a problem anymore. Everyone makes drivers for it now. And it is the most stable MS OS, which is important for automating laboratory tests. It is also the most secure MS OS (which isn't saying a whole lot  ). But XP is better for home use and gaming from what I've heard.

I know a couple of guys who are very good hardware/software guys who swear by 2000, and think that it, properly tweaked, is the most stable and 'best' for gaming, among other things. They regard XP as "bloatware". Still, I have been enjoying using XP, and I think it games fine, but it does require a bunch of system to run. Most gamers have enough machine to push it fine, but every bit counts, right? My vote goes to XP, but 2000 will serve you well no doubt.

Funny thing is the Gods game server runs on Win 2000, and it has probably crashed and restarted about 6 times since it has been up. (Not the Sam deticated game that runs on it, that crashes a lot more then that :P) Yet my computer at home running XP Pro, has not crashed for like months on end and I can't remember the last time it crashed. (My computer at home never gets shut off)

Then something ain't right. I've been running a Win2K computer at my lab continuously for at least 6 months without a problem. And it's even running my software. LOL. :drink:

I think you hit the nail on the head there. I can crash XP almost on command. I just open sam and poof! I do like XP though. I never had 2000 but I got a copy of pro.
Sirc, why can't you have XP at home?? I mean, what can't you do in XP that you can in 2000?

It's a compatibility issue. I need to know that what I am doing works on Win2k. Each operating system has it's own qwirks. :WTF:

That was directed towards Win 2000. Windows XP Pro is hard for me to crash. Sam doesn't crash on my system. If your system is crashing from Sam running, sounds more like a hardware conflict to me.

What could it be?? I just got a new vid card, ati 9700 pro. So I know it isn't that. Just lately it seems like it freezes a lot, and I sit there and wait, and sometimes it comes out of it, and other times it doesn't. I have in the past few days, when someone respawns, it lags me to sometime 400ms ping, lag spike, and it never used to do it before. :WTF:

Well the only time I had Sam crash on this system is when I had a 300watt power supply. I would be in a game and the system would lock up then restart. I contacted Asus, and told me to pump up my power supply. So I bought an Antec True Blue 480watt, and have never crashed out again. That may not be your problem though, you should make a seperate post about it in hardware.

hmmmmmmmm me starts to wondering if adding the ati 9700 pro it taking a little too much from the power supply now :hmmm:
I guess I better start building my system then :wootrock:
Thanks for the info Slice ;)

well heres my oppinion. windows 2000 is great os but does not have all the multimedia and new tools as windows xp. my suggestion is you tell us what you are doing or plan to do with the pc and i can give you a more accurate reason. i will say this---do not get windows xp home edition as it sucks and does not have all the feature you have with windows 2000. if you are deciding go for windows 2000 or windows xp pro. there are differnces between pro and home. i personally like xp better than windows 2000 for all the quick setups. it pretty much does alot of the work for ya. it also has some good interfaces. if you like windows 2000 you can just disable all the eyecandy and you pretty much got the same os with more features. now the reason i like windpws 2000 is it doesnt have all the spyware that xp has but i am not too sure about that today with all the updates and crap. i use both os's for difernt reasons. i still love nt 4.0 for file server. thing kicks ass with any processor and does not eatup memory like the newer family members. anyone agree they like nt 4?

This is a util to block M$ intrusion. I also read about a firm detedting that M$ was getting info about 3rd party software installed on people's machines, but to what end is unknown. That is rather Big-brotherish, and it's scary.
