Can you mess up your car by going in reverse?

My friend and i were driving home from a poker game and we were just messing around and he accidentally put his car in reverse while doing maybe only 20 down a road, his car immediately stopped working and we had to push it all the way home. The ignition doesn't work and when you turn the key nothing happens.

what happened?
does he need a new car?

You can try just draining it but I'd bet you need to get it checked out by a licensed professional.

try putting it in reverse and haul to about 20 mph then put it in drive.. that should do the trick.

Me and my friend drove his car up to 35mph and then threw the car into reverse. Engine light came on and we had to restart the car.

but it started, and you went on your way, no problem. that is just a safety switch. no gears will engage when you do that.

Fail troll is fail. As jim said, mythbusters did this, its not even physically possible in most cars, and not at ALL possible in manual transmissions...dont be an idiot.

The linkage is probably out of synk. Does it go into Park okay ?
If not you might have to readjust it, (not a big deal).

This works! You also need to hold a lighter above the gas tank to make sure your weener doesn't get stuck in the hole.
