Ya'll may remember I'm a bit of a photographer. Went out last weekend to the beach and grabbed some evening shots that let me play with some light-painting type shots.

Most of these are a girl who had a light-up hula hoop except for the last which was another girl that had some light up poi.

These aren't great as I don't have the best equipment for this but I did alright with what I had.

Also went out a couple weeks ago and did a shoot at a local venue called Jannus Live. Were several cool bands including a favorite of mine out of Miami called Suenalo. These guys are seriously hot. Sort of an afro-cuban hip hop funk band.

BTW - here's a video I shot of Suenalo at another show last year. Song really gets cranking around 1:15 or so. I freakin love this song.

And just for the hell of it, another video I shot recently... a memorial concert for a local music legend who passed away really young.

Some friends got together and did a cover of Deep Purple's Highway Star. One of my favorite classic rock tunes. Great keyboard solo (my friend Rick Olson nailed it) and a great guitar solo (Another friend Jerry Outlaw in the purple shirt) freakin crushed it.

The hula hoop picture was amazing. In fact I'm not sure how that was even done. It seems to come out of the sky too far above what is possible.

The first video is not to my taste, sorry. Not into rap, or whatever that was called. I prefer to listen to bands that have a singer on vocals.

The Highway Star cover was rather impressive. They pretty much nailed it live, which is not an easy thing to do.

The sound quality was better than I expected. What camera do you use Bingo?

For all the hula hoop shots, I was using a Canon Rebel XT with a 50mm 1.4 lens. Basically, she's winging that thing around fast enough that I just have to use a slightly slower shutter speed. That's why the backgrounds generally tend to be blurry - it's tough to not have ANY hand-shaking when you're doing that. It really needs to be a on tripod to do it right. It works alright in this case since it's dark enough that you don't see just how blurry everyone else is, plus most people are standing fairly still watching her.
The effect comes from her not just going around her waist either, but even up her arm which is up over her head.
If you look at the others in the gallery I linked, you'll see another where she stuck her leg out and it makes a long, curving tube somewhat like a nautilus shell.

For the videos, it was just a plain Flip HD. No external mic or anything. They actually do remarkably well for that :)

Thanks for the compliments!

Just cause I love Jerry's playing on this song... here's their version of Jeff Beck's song "Nadia". You may or may not like this. No vocals but some freakin insane guitar work by Jerry on this.
